About Ram Chandra Poudel

Ram Chandra Poudel, the third President of Nepal who was born on 15 October 1944, is a Nepalese politician currently in office as of 13 March 2023.  A former senior leader of the Nepali congress, Poudel previously served as the speaker of the House of Representatives from 1994 to 1999, and was the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs from 1999 to 2002. First elected to parliament in 1991, he served in numerous other ministerial positions and was the Leader of Opposition from 2009 to 2013, as the parliamentary party leader of the Nepali Congress. He was victorious in the Constituent Assembly from Tanahun Region No. 2. Paudel, a post-graduate from Tribhuvan University, is the leader of the Nepali Congress parliamentary party.

Paudel, who has held various ministries including the Minister of Peace and Reconstruction and the Deputy Prime Minister, has held various responsibilities including the editor of the party mouthpiece Nepal Pukar. 

Before being elected as the President, Ram Chandra Poudel served as Nepal’s Deputy Prime Minister, cabinet minister, and Speaker. He spent years of his life fighting for democracy in the country. Poudel was appointed Vice president of the Nepali Congress Tanhu district committee in 1980, and rose to become General Secretary in 2005, Vice President in 2007 and acting president of the party in 2015. In 2020, he was honoured with the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun from Japan, for his role in strengthening Nepal-Japan ties.
